中央美院毕业展第一部

Its that time of year again, when sweaty gallerists flock to art academy campuses, eager to snatch up the next big thing. Here’s a few choices from the exhibition of students from the sculpture department. Head of the department Sui Jianguo was in attendance, admiring the works while a swarm of his admirers hovered behind him. Sub-themes seemed to include creepy, horror film make-believe and the creative use of hair…

igloo

igloo out

This igloo piece was hiding under a tree, it was made of spray foam used in construction, covered in a sheet, and holes were cut in the walls. It was made on location, and although it looked a little dubiously constructed, it was an anomaly as the only work deviating from figurative representations, shiny materials or nostalgic antiques and tropes.

hair

These old cabinets were hairy––hair was woven into shapes inside of them, grew out from under them and looked menacing amidst the shattered mirrors. It was disturbingly like the Japanese cult horror film, “the Ring” (which this reporter believes was infinitely more frightening than the US version).  Classmate Lanlan said, what a shame to do that to the furniture.

hair head

hair eyes

Fans of realistic busts can take delight in the creepy shavings plastered in this guy’s face. There is something strangely appealing about these plaster and hair busts, although the back of his head inspired nausea.

This transformer is titled “Perpetrator,” and although it lacks a certain layer of depth, it is one impressive construction.

Oh I didn’t mean to say that in a negative way (doing that hair thing to the furniture) It was more like an exclamation of, wow how something I’m so familiar with can turn into something else the next day.

When are we adding the third column to your blog?
