Nie Mu’s layers and layers of digital paintings / Tracey Snelling’s charming urban dioramas
Two women, urbanity, the year of 2008 in China. One is aiming for a clean, digital escape from the outside world; the other massages cardboard into urban scenes that strive to imitate a harsh reality. The differences between these two artists is so great, it makes them suitable to be displayed together.
Nie Mu’s digital paintings look better on the computer screen than on the wall, where their layers are compressed into a two-dimensional, static form. The handmade appeal of Tracy Snelling’s dioramas of Chinese street scenes contrasts with the pixilated lightboxes and photos nextdoor, in the windows she places photographs and video.
